Overview

Explore Riga at your own pace with a self-guided audio walking tour on your phone that covers nine outdoor stops through the medieval Old Town and the Quiet Centre. Stops include the House of the Blackheads, St. Peter’s Church, the Cat House, the Swedish Gate and the Freedom Monument; audio and text are available in seven languages and you can start anytime.

Itinerary

Main stop

Rātslaukums, 1050

Start your walk at the House of the Blackheads. Just open Ciceru nearby to begin exploring this reconstructed 14th century guild hall from the outside, where the lavish Dutch Mannerist façade and symbolic sculptures tell the story without entering the building.

Reformācijas Laukums, 1050

View St. Peter’s Church from the square. The towering spire, the golden rooster and the Gothic brickwork are all visible from the exterior and offer a complete look at Riga’s most dramatic repeat reconstruction project.

Kalku, 10, LV-1050 Riga

Pause outside the historic storefront associated with Riga Black Balsam. The ceramic bottles, signage and Old Town setting provide all the context needed for this legendary Latvian potion while keeping the stop outdoors.

1050

Wander through Livu Square and admire the Cat House from street level. The angry black cats on its turrets and the colorful façades surrounding the square can all be appreciated fully from the outside.

Herdera laukums, 1050

Take in the exterior of Riga Cathedral from Dome Square. The mix of Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque elements, along with the famous rooster atop the spire, create a rich outdoor experience that does not require entry.

Mazā Pils iela, 1050

Stand on Maza Pils Street and admire the trio of historic houses from the street. Their Gothic, Mannerist and Baroque façades provide the entire architectural narrative from the outside.

Torņa iela, 1050

Walk under the Swedish Gate and view the Powder Tower from the surrounding streets. Both remnants of Riga’s medieval defenses are best experienced from the exterior, including the embedded cannonballs on the tower walls.

Brivibas Laukums, Central District, LV-1050 Riga

Pause before the Freedom Monument and observe Milda, the three stars, and the sculptural groups surrounding the base. The monument’s meaning and impact are fully conveyed outdoors.

Alberta iela, 1010

Wrap up your tour on Alberta Street. Admire the expressive Art Nouveau façades, stone faces, and dramatic ornamentation created by Mikhail Eisenstein before ending your walk in Riga’s most theatrical neighborhood.
